Golf scoring terms and reading score to par
A golf score is the total strokes you take across all holes, compared to the course's total par to gauge how you played. The lower your score to par, the better the result.
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Albatross | 3 under par (e.g. 2 on a par 5) |
| Eagle | 2 under par |
| Birdie | 1 under par |
| Par | Equal to par |
| Bogey | 1 over par |
| Double bogey | 2 over par |
| Triple bogey | 3 over par |
Your score to par for the whole round is total strokes minus total par. For example, shooting 85 on a par 72 course is +13 (13 over par). To calculate the differential used for handicapping, enter this total into the Golf Handicap Calculator.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How do I read a score to par?
Score to par is your total strokes minus total par. Zero means even par (E), a negative number is under par (e.g. −2), and a positive number is over par (e.g. +5). Most amateurs finish a round over par.
What do birdie, bogey, and double bogey mean?
One stroke under par is a birdie, two under is an eagle, equal to par is par, one over is a bogey, and two over is a double bogey. This tool color-codes each hole's strokes.
Do I have to fill in all 18 holes?
No. Only the holes you enter are totaled, so you can check your running total score and score to par mid-round. Empty holes are treated as 0.
Is par 72 the standard?
Most full 18-hole courses are par 72 (commonly four par-3s, ten par-4s, and four par-5s). Courses can vary from par 70 to 73, so adjust each hole's par to match your course scorecard.
